Speaker Program Details
Growing Community Gardens in Guelph
Presenter: Samantha Dupré
Since 2012, the City of Guelph has worked with the Upper Grand District School Board, the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition and other community partners on a formal program to grow and support the city’s community garden network. The network currently includes a wide variety of community led projects including 22 gardens and two orchards that have all evolved differently to suit the communities they serve. Learn a little bit about Guelph’s experiences in community gardening including stories highlighting particular challenges and creative solutions as well as the benefits of using a network model to encourage ongoing engagement in community gardening. There will be time for questions and discussion as well.
Samantha Dupré wears many hats in her role of community stewardship coordinator for the parks department at the City of Guelph, one of which is coordinating the city’s community garden network. She loves this aspect of her role as she is an avid vegetable gardener herself and feels privileged to play her part in connecting people with healthy nutritious food and opportunities to learn and grow their community. Her academic background is in “environmental studies” which means that she is always looking at the gardens program through the lens of the many environmental and social benefits it provides and is continually inspired by the dedication of the Guelph community in service of these goals.
Guelph Turfgrass Institute (GTI) Update
Presenter: Cam Shaw
The GTI was established in 1987 to conduct research and extension and to provide information on turfgrass production and management to members of the Canadian turfgrass industry. The GTI is part of the University of Guelph and is supported by the university, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the turfgrass industry. The research activities at the GTI focus in areas such as: the environmental aspects of pesticide use, evaluation of grass species, cultivars, and seeding methods, sports field construction, fertility and management programs, pesticide use and the biological and cultural control of diseases in weeds. Cam’s talk will look at the changes and transitions at the GTI over the past three years and will look forward to the new roles and research it will take on in the future.
Cam Shaw has been in the turfgrass industry for over 18 years and is an alumnus of the Diploma in Turfgrass Management program at the University of Guelph. Formerly an assistant superintendent, Cam’s experiences were primarily involved with the golf course maintenance sector where he had the opportunity to work at famed club’s such as Jasper Park Lodge and TPC Boston. Arriving at the GTI in October of 2017, Cam took on the new role of Communications and Outreach Coordinator for the Guelph Turfgrass Institute (GTI). In his new position, Cam looks forward to connecting with a broad range of turf industry and public stakeholders groups as well as continuing to promote the research, educational programs and services the GTI has to offer.
