Mark and Ben Cullen host the Canada Blooms Inspiration Series

Part of the beauty of growing flowers and foliage outside is the ability to bring them inside. At Canada Blooms, the Garden Club of Toronto’s juried Flower Show, along with the magnificent floral displays, demonstrate that flowers don’t have to stay in the garden! If you love creating fresh bouquets, plan your garden with the plants you’ll need. Some great cutting flowers are zinnias, gladiolas, mums, rudbeckia, and shrubs like hydrangea and weigela. When fashioning your indoor arrangements, consider the scent they carry as much as the aesthetic. Lilies are beautiful, but their perfume can be overpowering in a small space. The classic English garden style – think lavender and peonies - lends itself well to a cutting garden. Spring bulbs – like tulips and daffodils – are always featured at Canada Blooms. The colour and scent are what we all need after a cold winter! If you have the space, consider planting a bed of bulbs specifically for cutting. Oh, and don’t forget about foliage! You can add a lot of interest to any arrangement with some great leaves and branches!
