Living Landscapes

This year’s Landscape Ontario Garden was aptly named 'Choose Your Path' as an expression of the numerous career opportunities available in green professions. Visitors are invited to explore the garden and imagine themselves in a challenging and fulfilling career that let's them work outside to enhance their own life and the environment around them.

Gone are the days of hiring summer students as a seasonal work force. Most landscaping companies operate full time for at least ten months of the year with the remaining months being used for business planning, refitting equipment and buildings, updating staff training and accommodating staff holidays.

As you walk through the feature garden, imagine the types of knowledge and skills that were required to create and build it. What aspect of this garden do you enjoy the most?

The demand for qualified staff is huge. Large scale projects require multidisciplinary teams to put all the unique aspects of the build into proper order for beauty and environmental sustainability as well as long term durability and maintenance. Design, lighting, engineering, irrigation, heavy equipment operation, masonry, plant care, biodiversity, habitat creation, green infrastructure, storm water runoff, heat island effects - there is an endless list of career opportunities for those who are team oriented and who find fulfilment in a hands-on environment.

You can choose your green career path through the numerous college, university or apprentice programs available. Or follow a path set out by one of Landscape Ontario's member companies who will invest in your training as one of their valued employees.

Do you look out the window everyday and wonder what kind of career you could have? One where you feel you really belong? Think of the vast opportunities in Forestry, Arboriculture or Horticulture were you can see, smell, touch and feel what you do.

How many different kinds of professionals do you think it took to make this garden possible? Take the time to explore and learn about what is here. This garden was built for your inspirations and to help you Choose Your Path!
