Cassie is planning a pre-meeting for the IPM/minor use priorities. More details to follow. These fall events will all take place on November 26:

1. Research priorities for agri-chemicals (Landscape Ontario office: 8 a.m. to noon. Open invitation)
2. Sector research priorities (LO office: noon-4 p.m. Open invitation)
3. LO Growers Group Meeting (LO office: 4-5 p.m. LO Grower Group members only)
4. Fall dinner (Piper's Heath Golf Club: 6 p.m. everyone and their partners are welcome)

2. JC Bakker & Sons celebrates 75 years

Congratulations to JC Bakker & Sons who celebrated their 75th year in business on September 17 set against a backdrop of Lake Ontario and fields of roses. Many nursery growers (including myself) joined in for the celebration which turned out to be a great event.

3. Regulated Pest Update from Jeanine and Jamie

Spotted Lanternfly

• SLF has been intercepted recently in Amherstburg, Windsor, and 'prevented' from being an interception in Québec (a vehicle crossing the border into Canada was turned back).
• Looking for training for SLF? Reach out to Jeanine for options.
• You can also reach out to your local CFIA office for guidance.
• There was a small error in the Spanish version of the SLF Spanish poster that was distributed. Please get the updated version.

Box tree moth

• The mesh trial results are complete. Read the Final Report.
• Please send your trapping data to Cassie by October 7 so she can summarize this season's data.

AND...there was a positive find of Phytophthora austrocedrae in the U.S. this summer. With Ontario growers getting product in from Oregon, you will need to stay vigilant for signs and symptoms of this disease in Cupressaceae hosts that have been imported.

4. New cost sharing intake for energy and soil health projects

The Ontario Agricultural Sustainability Initiative intake window opens October 16-29, 2024. More information on the initiative can be found on the Ontario website. Eligibility criteria will be available through the Ontario Soil Crop website.

5. Temporary Foreign Worker news (LICC/OFVGA)

The first consultation on housing remained open until September 27. There were a number of submissions, including one from LO, but there are no major concerns at this time. We are monitoring the communications closely and will be prepared to respond to ESDC as required.

6. CNLA Update from Jamie Aalbers

Spotted Lanternfly directive consultation
A new directive to mitigate the introduction and spread of spotted lanternfly has been posted for public consultation by CFIA. The consultation closes on October 25, 2024.

D-24-01: Spotted Lanternfly - domestic and import phytosanitary requirements describes the phytosanitary import requirements for nursery stock and logs of deciduous species with bark from regulated areas of the U.S. to prevent the introduction of SLF into Canada. It also outlines the domestic requirements for these same articles moving from regulated to non-regulated areas in Canada to prevent the spread of this pest to non-infested areas. Currently there are no regulated areas for SLF in Canada as detections and/or populations of this planthopper have not yet been confirmed in Canada.

CNLA will be responding to this consultation. After reviewing, if you would also like to respond, please give me a call to discuss your comments so they can be included, or you can also comment directly to CFIA by emailing  cfia.ias-eee.acia@inspection.gc.ca.

Growers Nursery Tour to Italy
Plans are underway for a CNLA Growers Canada Committee organized tour of nurseries in the Pistoia region of Italy from February 18-24, 2025. The trip will start with a day and a half at the MyPlant & Garden Show in Milan, followed by 2-3 days of industry tours (nurseries, garden centres). If you are interested, please email me to ensure you are included in all emails related to the tours. Booking travel and hotels are each individual's responsibility, but a tour bus will be chartered for the group for the time we are in Italy. Some AgriMarketing funding is available to cost share expenses, the amount per grower dependent on how many growers attend.
