U.S.-Canada Trade War: Navigating the Impacts
Dear Landscape Ontario members,
The landscape horticulture industry is facing new uncertainty following the U.S. government’s decision to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports — a move that will have a direct impact on many of our members. In response, Canada announced its own set of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, which could have further implications for businesses across the country. While the full impact is still unfolding, these tariffs are expected to:
But beyond policy and trade implications, I want to acknowledge the deeper impact that economic uncertainty can have on all of us. Over the years, I have witnessed the ebb and flow of our industry — the challenges, triumphs and resilience of those who make up this profession. The recent tariffs are a stark reminder that external forces can cast a shadow over our businesses, our teams and the communities we serve.
Throughout time, our industry has weathered storms: economic downturns, environmental challenges and shifts in market demand. We have prevailed by standing together, fostering collaboration and drawing strength from our collective resilience.
Now, more than ever, we must embrace this spirit of unity and connection. Our industry is built on relationships — not just between businesses and clients, but among colleagues, suppliers, and professionals who share a deep commitment to our industry.
Here’s how we can lean on one another during this time:
Stay connected
Check in on peers, suppliers and clients who may be facing new challenges. A conversation, a word of encouragement, or a shared solution can make all the difference.
Share knowledge and resources
If you have insights or strategies that could help fellow businesses navigate cost increases or supply chain disruptions, consider sharing them. We are stronger when we collaborate.
Support local
Whenever possible, prioritize sourcing materials and equipment from local suppliers to help strengthen our industry and keep resources within our communities.
Engage with your industry
Whether through networking, industry events or informal gatherings, staying connected with fellow professionals helps provide perspective, problem-solving opportunities and reassurance that no one is facing these challenges alone.
Advocate together
Through Landscape Ontario and our collective efforts, we can amplify our voices and advocate for policies that support our businesses and communities.
If you have concerns, insights, or specific challenges, please reach out. Your input will help shape our response and advocacy efforts.
Together, we can weather these changes and emerge stronger, wiser, and more united than ever before.
