Landscape Ontario continues to demonstrate why it is an industry leader in horticulture and landscaping education. In 2006 the Ministry of Education announced new sector-specific programs that offer students the opportunity to explore a specific area or career interest and to acquire the skills, safety awareness, certification training and industry related experience that will assist them in their post secondary pathways.

Landscape Ontario played a pivotal role in developing the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Horticulture and Landscaping program that is now offered at various secondary schools throughout Ontario.  Two such programs are located in Halton Region. Students enrolled in both Notre Dame Secondary School and White Oaks High School SHSM Horticulture and Landscaping programs will benefit from the industry partnership that has been developed with Landscape Ontario. Through this partnership, SHSM students will be afforded the opportunity to begin their Canadian Horticulture Technician (CHT) certification, participate in guest speaker lectures and obtain relevant industry-related experience through experiential learning opportunities. Landscape Ontario also played a lead role in developing the new Green Industries curriculum. These courses will be incorporated in to the new Technological Studies curriculum policy documents in September 2009.

A special thank you to Terry Murphy for his vision, leadership and tireless efforts in promoting these new and exciting educational initiatives to our next generation of valued horticulture and landscaping professionals.

The Halton CDSB would also like to recognize Notre Dame teachers, Brian Miller, Allan Nason and Maureen Fazzari for all their hard work and dedication required to set up this SHSM program at the local level.
