Landscape Ontario and Dean McLellan Stonework are pleased to announce the inaugural dry stone walling course and certification day at the LO Home Office, on June 15 - 17.

Andrew Loudon, the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain's chief examiner, as well as another master craftsman will be on hand to instruct and conduct the first certification day. This is a rare opportunity to learn from two of the finest wallers and workers of stone in the world today.

The course is open to stone wallers, masons, landscapers and enthusiasts of all abilities, and runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Lunches are provided. This is a two-day hands on course that will cover safety, basic terminology, structure and styles of dry stone walling. Students will be able to identify proper walling techniques and construct their own walls with an understanding of structure. The two-day course includes 15 hours of instruction and a certificate upon completion. Day three, Mon., June 17, is certification day, which also runs from 9:00 a.m - 4:30 p.m.

The two-day format allows lots of time for students to ask questions regarding their own dry stone projects so please bring your questions. It is a rain or shine event, and students are required to bring their own walling tools, safety shoes, eyewear protection and appropriate clothing for the elements. All instructors are certified with the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain. Cost is $250 per student for the two-day course, and Level 1 certification is $250 and Level 2 certification is $300. This cost includes the required fees to register with the DSWA of Great Britain. For more information about the certification process, visit the Dry Stone Walling Association website.

The course is held at the LO Home Office in Milton. For more details about the course, and to sign up, please contact Dean McLellan at 519-321-1586 or hlmasonry@ehtel.ca.

This is the first of many as part of the newly established Dry Stone Walling Institute. The Institute operates under the umbrella of Landscape Ontario, and is organized and run by Dean McLellan. Courses are taught by certified instructors with the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain, the world leader in this craft. Certification opportunities will be available at various times in the year, which enables landscapers to further their skills and abilities.
