Re:      Simcoe Muskoka and area Horticultural Technician - Apprenticeship Proposal

 

This is to confirm that Insert Company Name Here supports the expansion of the delivery of the Horticultural Apprenticeship program that provides skilled technicians to the landscape horticulture industry in the Barrie and Collingwood area. I applaud this initiative and support Landscape Ontario (LO) and the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (MTCU) in the development of this apprenticeship training program.

The landscape horticulture industry is a growing industry with a gap in the availability of skilled labour. Over the last few years, there has been a tremendous labour shortage in the horticulture industry as a whole and I know that the development of this training program will assist us in filling this gap in this developing region. Further, according to the Deloitte Report titled The Economic Impact of Ornamental Horticulture in Canada 2009, the industry can expect a continued crisis in the availability of skilled labour in the landscape horticulture industry for the next 10-12 years due to the anticipated retirement of the baby boomer generation, combined with the increasing recognition of the importance that our green infrastructure contributes to the health and well being of society. This proposed training program will help to close the labour gap in the landscape horticulture industry.

I look forward to working with L.O. and MTCU towards expanding the delivery of this training opportunity for youth and existing employees that will contribute to the economic well -being of the industry and this region.
